No volunteer will be called upon to do anything they have not been trained to do. Safety for the individual is always paramount. There are various types of training available to BCERT Members:

  •  Introduction to BCERT includes familiarization with BCERT SOPs, the history of BCERT, Opportunities in BCERT. Sessions are scheduled as needed.
  •  Members will be trained in Radio use and protocol when issued their radio. Click here for more radio use details.
  •  Other opportunities for emergency related training are periodically presented such as CPR and Traffic Direction.

BCERT Drills Print E-mail

BCERT Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) require all members to attend a minimum of one drill event annually.

Drills are planned and held approximately every second month throughout the year. Each drill replicates an actual emergency situation. Once set, drills are held rain or shine.

Participants will receive an actual TENS telephone callout, which will give the street address of the simulated emergency, and a brief description of the simulated situation.

  • The TENS message will tell you to turn your radios on to the BCERT channel and to maintain radio silence until a Communicator takes control.
  • Participants then follow the instructions and assignments to them given by the Communicator.

The drills are monitored, and once personnel are in place, Rovers will drive the route, discussing proper attire, proper communication technique, proper parking, proper directional technique, and proper safety technique.

A normal drill will last approximately 45 to 60 minutes.
